THE IDEOLOGICALLY-DRIVEN "CONVERSION THERAPY" BILL THAT WILL HARM KIDS & THREATEN CHARTER RIGHTS
Bill C-6 is proposed legislation to change the criminal code of Canada to penalize vaguely-defined methods of "conversion therapy" with exorbitant fines and/or up to five years imprisonment. Supporters claim it protects Canadians struggling with sexuality and gender identity issues, but what it proposes will actually end up harming children. Furthermore, the actual language of the bill puts personal Charter rights and freedoms at risk because it:
This is a dangerous bill that must be stopped. MPs need to hear from their constituents if they are going to get the courage needed to stand up and vote to Stop Bill C-6. And with only one last reading in the House of Commons (probably in early February, 2021) before it becomes law, your MP needs to hear from you now.
This bill is built on the notion that children can and should be the only ones to make life-altering decisions surrounding their sexuality including the choice to medically and surgically alter their birth gender. Although the majority of dysphoric children revert to their birth genders by adulthood, the bill would legally block any parental, pastoral, or professional input that does not affirm the child's "sexual identity" or "gender expression" at the time.
"[C-6] forbids counselling that helps children and teens love their bodies and feel comfortable in their own skin." --ARPA
"[C-6] will undoubtedly result in many more kids being medically transitioned with hormone treatments and potentially even surgically transitioned through extremely invasive surgeries." -- D. Sloan

The proposed legislation of Bill C-6 is based on very narrow view of sexuality and gender. Its' preamble includes disparaging language that refers to opposing viewpoints as "myths and stereotypes." It does not permit those with a differing perspective to parent, teach, or work based on their own beliefs.
Section 15 (1) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms grants ALL individuals equal rights and protection. C-6 violates the Canadian rights of those who disagree with the fundamental ideology underlying this bill. If the government puts this ideology into law, what other ideas will be criminalized in the future? What precedent will this bill set regarding future speech codes? What will future governments with other perspectives be able to legislate and restrict as a result of this bill?

The text of the bill defines "conversion therapy" as “a practice, treatment or service designed to change a person’s sexual orientation to heterosexual or gender identity to cisgender, or to repress or reduce non-heterosexual attraction or sexual behaviour.”
The bill’s overly broad definition of conversion therapy does not distinguish between private and professional “practices/treatments/services”. Without further specification and clarification, the bill would make religious counsel, family conversations and religious home education subject to law enforcement. That means parents could be jailed for lovingly talking to their kids about this!
"The definition of conversion therapy in Bill C-6 must be clear and unambiguous. The consequences for carrying out conversion therapy as defined in this bill would not be simply professional discipline or sanctions, such as loss of license or accreditation. These changes carry the potential of criminal sanction and imprisonment."--EFC

BRIEF: Evangelical Fellowship of Canada's Submission to the House of Commons
The bill states that any therapy designed to “reduce non-heterosexual…behavior” is to be outlawed. This interferes with a parent’s right to limit the sexual activity of their own children through the outside help of counselors and professional health practitioners. This puts parents at a serious disadvantage and children in a vulnerable and unhealthy position.

Bill C-6 eliminates therapeutic options for everyone and particularly puts Christian and traditional-faith families at great risk. These families, who would NEVER consider abusive or damaging “conversion therapy” for their children, will have no place to go for help. Christian and ethical teachings on human sexuality will be forbidden. Conversations with friends, pastors, or counsellors that suggest children might find peace and comfort within their natural-born gender would be outlawed. These families will be left to struggle alone, with the children suffering most.
“[C-6} imposes only one option for people dealing with gender identity issues by effectively prohibiting the affirmation of natal gender identity and allowing only practices, treatments and services for a “person’s gender transition...”
BRIEF: "Unconscionable and Unconstitutional Bill C-6’s Attempt to Dictate Choices Concerning Sexuality and Gender," by Justice Center for Constitutional Freedoms
Faith families and the precious youth of Canada stand to suffer greatly if this bill passes. Thankfully, we live in a democratic society that allows us to express our concerns.
One of the first bills presented by the government this session, C-6 is moving quickly into law. It has already passed through the first and second readings in the House of Commons and reviewed by the Justice and Human Rights Committee. It is slotted to go to a third and final reading sometime in late January or early February.
A record number of submissions to the Justice Committee show that many people and organizations are deeply concerned about Bill C-6 for the reasons above (and many more). Nevertheless, on December 10, 2020 the committee voted against weighing these objections further and chose instead to proceed with the bill with amendments that only broadened and furthered the bill to work against religious liberty.
C-6 has broad-based approval among all parties with only 7 MPs voting against it in initial reading. While politicians can promote various interpretations of the bill, it is the actual words and language of bill C-6 that must bear scrutiny. The legislation itself, not the words of politicians, will direct legal action in the future.
The current wording of this bill will bring harm to Canadians and must be stopped.
"I believe that as citizens of Canada and participants in parliamentary democracy we should not fall for the Liberal government’s blatant cynical plot to use what could have been a reasonable bill banning coercive and violent therapy, as a political wedge. We should constructively propose amendments to the Bill that respect parental responsibilities, parental rights and children’s reproductive futures. There must be clear definitions of “Conversion Therapy” that will assist the courts and avoid legal misinterpretation as typically happens with vague and undefined laws." --Leslyn Lewis, Haldimand-Norfolk
